Medical Abortion

Abortion Pill or RU 486
Abortion Pill is effective upto 49 days of pregnancy. If you have missed your menstrual periods and from the first day of the last menstrual period - you are within 7 weeks of pregnancy - then the Abortion pill may be the right option for you. 
With this method, a pill (Mifeprex)  is given to stop the pregnancy and a second medicine (Misoprostol)  is given 2 days later to cause the pregnancy to be expelled.  Except in rare cases, no surgical procedure is needed.
The advantage of medical abortion is that you can avoid having a surgical procedure done.  The disadvantage is that it is a slower process that occurs over a few days and has a higher failure rate than surgical abortion.

First Trimester Abortion

First Trimester abortion can be done upto 12 weeks at our center.
The commonest method is Dilatation and suction evacuation. 
The procedure is done under sedation with local anasthesia or short general anasthesia.
The procedure involves dilatation of the cervix with serial teflon dilators followed by suction evacuation of the abortus.
The procedure is safe and has a very low failure rate.
The procedure is completed in a short time and the woman can be discharged on the same day.
Post procedure - she is advised to take medications for a few days.
A routine follow up visit is scheduled as per your convenience.
Post abortion advise and counselling is done in selected women.
Contraceptive advise if required can be given during the follow up visit.
First trimester abortion can be combined with Tubal ligaton if the family is complete

Second Trimester Abortion

Second Trimester abortion is done from 12 weeks to 20 weeks of pregnancy.
Second trimester abortion can be done with medications like Prostaglandin gel or Vaginal tablets followed by Intravenous medication to promote uterine contractions.
The process is like a mini delivery and involves discomfort and pain for a short duration of time.
The fetus is expelled following which  a check curettage under sedation or anasthesia is performed to complete the procedure.
The procedure is safe but may require for the woman to stay at our hospital for a period of 2-3 days.
Post procedure counselling is done.
Contraceptive advise is given in the follow up visit.
Second trimester abortion can be combined with Tubal ligation if the family is completed.
